Organic Farming – It’s Advantages For The Environment

3 min read

Have you ever wondered how your actions sometimes may affect the environment?
Its a known fact, that we humans pollute and cause most of the damage to the environment. So, what can we do to stop this exploitation and save it for future generations?
Here is a thought! Organic farming.

Organic farming/agriculture relies on ecosystem management rather than external agricultural input.

It plays a major role to support biodiversity, and to maintain a natural balance. It also works for the preservation of natural resources.

WOW! that’s amazing you say. There is so much more to it, Let’s get started.

What Is Organic Farming?

To grow healthy food, start with a healthy soil

It is a system that considers possible environmental and social impacts by eliminating the use of synthetic inputs in farming. These are replaced with organic fertilizers. Organic fertilizers increase long-term soil fertility and prevent pests and diseases.

Above all, food produced in this manner are improved in taste and has a higher nutritive value. It also serves to reduce pollution and soil erosion. It helps in conserving water, increase soil fertility, and in consuming less energy.

Let us discuss below some advantages of Organic farming

….

1. Say No to Harmful chemicals and Pesticides.

Farmers use pesticides on the crop to make them resistant to disease and to increase farm output.

However, as a side effect, these chemicals contaminate the soil for the long-term. Thus, causing soil compression, erosion, etc.

Synthetic fertilizers used in crop rotation have greater impacts in soil. These harsh chemicals contaminate soil, water, and air as well.

Organic minerals and microbiological fertilizers, on the other hand, contribute towards the protection of the natural environment.

2. Facilitates the Formation of Healthy soil.

To grow healthy food, we need a healthy base to supply nutrition. Thus, for healthy soil one must stop exploiting it with hazardous pesticides. Usage of such chemicals makes the soil to lose its natural thriving process.

Just 1 teaspoon of composite rich organic soil can host 600 million to one billion helpful bacteria from 15,000 species whereas the same quantity of the chemical treated soil has only 100 bacteria.

It takes a minimum of 100 years to form an inch of topsoil, so imagine how much soil can be saved if all farmers grew their crops by organic farming:)

3. Organic Farming Resists Global Warming Effect

Global warming

Organic agriculture participates in the alleviation of the greenhouse effect. It can also suppress global warming through its ability to separate carbon in the soil.

Did you know, that soil treated with chemicals can emit greenhouse gases?

There are also climate changes that do not favor farming.

Organic farming is likely to not only lessen the carbon dioxide in the air but also can slow down the climate changing process.

4. Organic Farming Helps To Fight Erosion

Soil erosion

Organic agribusiness helps to create healthy soil, thus preventing them from erosion. As an outcome, nutrient and energy cycling are boosted and the retentive abilities of the soil for nutrients and water are enhanced. Such management techniques also plays a significant role in soil erosion management.

A study says, that organic farming can create topsoil 8 inches higher than the chemically treated ones and only one-third of the soil is lost by soil erosion.

5.Improves Water Health

Organic farm conserves water, unlike non- organic farms. In non organic farms, the water is contaminated mostly with strong harmful pesticides.

Organic farmers concentrate more on soil amendment (with mulch) and irrigate their farms with much attention to water and energy usage. For instance, they use organic fertilizer (compost, animal manure, green manure), which are eco-friendly.

6.Discourage Algal formation

Algal blooms

Algal blooms (HABs) consequences have adverse effects on the health of people, ocean animals and other organisms. It is the result of a rapid increase in the algae population in freshwater or marine water. Its accumulation can cause discoloration and can affect the supply of water. However, the usage of petroleum-based fertilizers in conventional farms contributes to its part as well.

7.Supports Animal Health

Organic farming supports natural habitats

Organic farming supports natural habitats of insects, birds, fish, and animals. It allows a peaceful environment for all creatures that play a significant role in natural pest control.

Furthermore, animals can also enjoy a clean, chemical-free environment. It keeps them healthy and immune to the disease.

8. Organic Farming promotes biodiversity

Nowadays, species extinction has become popular. Organic farmers are both protectors and users of biodiversity at all degrees.

The maintenance of land structures can improve providing food and shelter. Also, the lack of pesticide use, as a result attract new species to the organic areas. This includes wild flora and fauna (e.g. birds). These organisms are useful to the organic system such as pollinators and pest predators.

Reduced biodiversity may promote the spread of infectious diseases. It may also influence people’s lifestyles.

Besides, each one of us is responsible for protecting the environment.
