Honestly, do you think your child is receiving the correct amount of nutrition for his/ her age?

In India, despite all the advancement on health and development , the statistics of nutrient and micronutrient deficiency stills remains high. Don’t worry, I am having the easiest as well as healthy recipes for children.

You may have thought that your child is a little slow in studies, gets difficulty to grasp things quickly and sleeps getting tired. Why can’t we realize that an unhealthy diet  can affects a child’s cognitive function?

How can we expect a child to get sucessful in everything if they are eating diets full of sugar and empty of nutrients?

Well, my kid is not eating! Yeah, making a child to eat is definitely a tough job but what if you deliver foods in a way which he will love instead of disappointed him with steamed vegetables!

Kids don’t like shapes of the vegetables but they don’t refuse colours:) Hope you get it!

Recipes For Children

1. Carrots And Eggs Filled Idlis

No indian homes could make their recipes for children without idlis. This steamed dumplings has approximately 39 calories, 2 grams of proteins, 2 grams of dietery fiber, 8 grams of carbohydrates and no fat.

More proteins are needed for muscle strength, so adding eggs makes them advantageous.

Yields : 6
Preparation time :5 mins
Cooking Time : 2 mins

Ingredients:

  • Carrots – 2 medium sized, finely grated
  • Onions. – 1 medium sized, finely chopped
  • Coriander leaves – 1 tbsp
  • Red chilli powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Dhaniya powder. -1/2 tsp
  • Egg – 1 or 2 ( 1 egg for three idlis appropriately)
  • Salt to taste

For Idli Batter Preparation:

  • Idli rice – 1 cup
  • Urad dal – 1/3 cup
  • Salt – to taste

Method:

Preparation Of Idli Batter:

  1. Wash the idli rice and urad dal. Soak them seperately for 3-4 hours.
  2. Grind rice with water using a food processor or blender ( according to your choice.) until it becomes smooth.
  3. Grind urad dal with a little water. Add more water to make the batter fluffy.
  4. Mix them and add salt to taste.
  5. Keep them aside 8 hours for fermentation.

How To Proceed:

  1. Heat the tawa, add onions and saute them until they get golden brown.
  2. Add the carrots, onions, corianders, beaten eggs, spices with  green chillies ( optional) to the batter.
  3. Grease the idli pit plate with very small amount of sesame seed oil.
  4. Add a tablespoon to each of the pits of the idli steamer.
  5. Steam for 5-10 minutes. You can use a fork or toothpick to poke and see whether the idlis are fully steamed.

2. Beetroot Dosa

Of course! Kids prefer dosa than any other breakfast. What if they turns pink? One of the innovative recipes for children of adding beetroot to dosa which improves your baby’s hemoglobin level!

Yields – 2
Preparation time – 5 mins
Cooking time- 5 mins

Ingredients:

  • Idli dosa batter – 2 cups
  • Beetroot – 1 small,cubes
  • Red chillies -2
  • Cumin seeds -1/2 tsp
  • Asofoetida – a pinch
  • Oil – needed

Method :

  1. Add the red chilles, jeera powder and the cube beetroot to the mixer and grind them to a smooth paste (without adding water.)
  2. Add in to the batter together with the pinch of asafoetida. Mix the batter well.
  3. In the cast-iron pan, spread the batter on circular motions to make dosa to the required thickness. Add little oil around it . Flip the dosa.
  4. Serve the dosa with coconut chutney! Cuz pink and white goes good:)

3. Snakegourd Milk Meal (Pudalangai Paal Kootu)

I bet snakegourds are not favourite for most of the kids. But do you know adding snakegourds to the diet will help to boost the immune system of your child reducing fevers and detoxify the body.

I am not going to show you a green recipes for children to make them run away!

Servings -2
Preparation time – 5 minutes
Cooking time – 10 minutes

Ingredients :

  • Chopped snakegourd – 1 cup
  • Cooked toor dal -1/2 cup
  • Boiled cow milk – 1/2 cup
  • Salt.            -3/4 teaspoon

For The Masala:

  • Coconut shredded coconut – 1/4 cup
  • Cumin seeds.              -1/2 tsp
  • Green chillies.             -2

For The Gravy:

  • Mustard seeds.    -1/4 tsp
  • Coconut oil         -1 tsp
  • Dry red chillies -3 to 4

Method :

  1. Boil the snake gourd pudalangai until they get tender but firm. Set aside.
  2. Make a paste of coconut, green chillies and cumin seeds. Grind the ingredients with 1/4 cup of water to a smooth paste.
  3. Heat a pan and put the boiled snakegourd pieces in, the coconut paste and the cooked toor dal.
  4. Add salt. Keep it in simmer. Add the milk in it and boil for one more minute. Remove from heat and set aside.
  5. Heat the coconut oil in a separate pan until hot. Add the mustard seeds and dried red chillies. Allow the mustard seeds crackle and add it immediately to the gravy.

4. Palak Paneer Made With Spinach

Keerai (spinach) definitely don’t go friendly with your child. But a child couldn’t neglect if they find their favourite paneer cubes  floating in it!

Keerai (containing iron for heme, vitamin A for for vision) with Paneer ( rich in protein and calcium for your kid’s development) is definitely a superb solution.

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time : 5 Servings : 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium sized tomato
  • 350 grams spinach
  • 5 garlic cloves, 2 chopped and 3 whole
  • I inch ginger
  • 1 green chilli
  • One large onion,finely chopped
  • One tablespoon of oil
  • 3/4 teaspoon of garam masala
  • 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of red chilli powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 225 grams of paneer cut into cubes
  • 1/2 tbsp of coriander leaves, crushed
  • Lemon juice to taste.

Method :

  1. Add little salt and spinach leaves to a pot of boiling water. Blanch spinach leaves 2 to 3 minutes until getting wilted.
  2. Take them out and put them in cold water. This helps the leaves to retain their green colour.
  3. Add the blanched spinach leaves, tomato, 3 cloves of garlic, ginger and green chilli to a mixer and grind them into a smooth paste. Set aside.
  4. Heat a pan in medium heat. After getting heated,add some oil to it and put the chopped garlic cloves. Saute them until they change colour.
  5. Add the chopped onions and cook them for 2 to 3 minutes until they get soft and golden pink.
  6. Add the puree with half cup of water. Cover the pan and let it cook for 10 minutes on medium heat. The spinach will boil. Stir them to avoid sticking at the sides and bottom of the pan.
  7. Once they get cooked, add the chilli powder, garam masala powder, turmeric powder and salt. Let them get cooked for a minute. You can also add sugar of half teaspoon to make it a little sweeter.
  8. Add the paneer cubes in it. Let the gas be simmer for 3-4 minutes. Switch off the flame, add lemon juice, coriander leaves and mix.
  9. Serve your baby with chappathi.

Notes: If you want the paneer to be crunchier, you can pan fry before adding it to the curry.

5. Chappathi Egg Rolls

Sounds tastier right? Chapati is an excellent source of soluble fibre which helps to keep the blood pressure levels balanced and prevents constipation by regulating bowel movements. They are one of the best recipes for children.

Yields : 4 Preparation Time : 5 Minutes Cooking Time : 10 Minutes

Ingredients :

  • 2 cups of wheat flour.
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tbsp of butter
  • 1 cup of green capsicums
  • 1/2 cup of carrots
  • Half tsp of pepper powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of coriander powder
  • 1 tbsp of Coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil as required

Method :

  1. Add the wheat flour, salt and required amount of water to a bowl to make a tight dough. Add some oil and mix it again. Keep it aside for half and hour.
  2. Take two eggs in a bowl and beat it.
  3. Heat the pan with some oil or butter. Add the carrots and capsicums along with the pepper powder and coriander powder.Saute them until cooked.
  4. Add the coriander leaves and salt then.Tranfer it to the bowl.
  5. Roll the chappathis as usual and put it in the tawa. Add oil. Cook both the sides slightly. Take it off.
  6. Heat some oil or butter in the pan. Pour the egg mixture in it and spread it. Slow up the flame and top it up with the vegetable stuffing. Press the half cooked chapathi in the egg. Turn it slowly.
  7. Roll it and serve it!

6. Fried Brinjal

Yields : 4 Preparation time : 5 minutes Cooking time: 3 minutes

Ingredients :

  • Peeled and sliced brinjal -2
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 th cup of milk
  • Oregano – 1 tbsp
  • Salt -1 tbsp
  • Olive Oil. -1/2 cup

Method:

  • Sprinkle salt on the brinjal and keep it aside for some time.
  • In a bowl, mix the milk, eggs and oregano . It should be thick.
  • Heat some oil in the pan.
  • Dip the brinjal in the egg mixture and then in some flour and fry till both sides gets golden.

7. Karela ( Bittergourd or Pavakkai) Tikkis

Shhh..Don’t tell them to your child! Let’s hide the bittergourd dude. The secret recipe for children boosts their immune system, cleans the liver and works for a glowing skin.

Serving : 4 Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking Time : 10 minutes

Ingredients :

  • 2  grated bitter gourd, unpeeled
  • 1  grated carrot/
  • Salt to taste
  • 3/4 cup of boiled and mashed green peas
  • 200 grams of crumbled paneer
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped coriander
  • 1/4 cup of  oats flour
  • 2 green chillies, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp of lemon juice
  • One and a half tsp of sunflower oil for greasing and cooking.
  • 1 tsp of red chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp of chat masala powder

Method:

  • Add the required amount of salt to the bitter gourd, mix them well and keep aside for 2-3 mins.
  • Combine the bittergourd, carrots, peas, paneer, coriander, oats, green chilli paste, lemon juice and salt in a bowl and mix them well.
  • Divide them into portions and use your hand to make them into a good flat and circular shape.
  • Heat a tawa and grease oil or ghee in it.
  • Place them on the hot tawa, drizzle oil around them and flip to the other side one by one.
  • Serve them to your kid with tomato chutney!

8. Banana Pancakes

Banana Pancakes

Pancakes with very few ingredients, the easiest recipe for children! Your child is going to see enjoy this.Banana contains vitamin B6 and vitamin C with loaded antioxidants and phytonutrients.

Servings : 3 Preparation Time: 3 minutes Cooking Time : 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 2 large eggs, slightly beaten
  • Butter or oil (optional)
  • Honey, dates syrup, maple syrup for serving.

Optional mix-ins (choose few)

  • 1/8 tsp of baking powder for fluffy pancakes.
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup of chopped nuts, chocolate chips or honey
  • Chopped apples,raisins etc.

Method:

  1. Peel and Mash the bananas well using fork. It’s okay of a few lumps until they get a good consistency.
  2. Add 1/8 tsp of baking powder to make them fluffier and whisk in Salt, cocoa powder or honey.
  3. Pour the eggs  on the banana Mash and stir them well. The batter will be very loose and liquidy than regular batter.
  4. Heat a cast iron pan on medium heat. Grease then with little butter or vegetable oil.
  5. Drop about two tablespoons of batter in the pan. It should sizzzle immediately if not, turn up the heat slightly more.
  6. Cook the pancake for 1 minute until they get brown and golden.
  7. Flip to the other side.

Tadaa! The banana pancakes are ready. Sprinkle the loose toppings and serve them with honey!

9. Sprouts Kichdi

The Sprouts we use increases nutrient levels, rich in protein, magnesium, folate , phosphorus and manganese and vitamins C and K. They boosts blood circulation, improves eyesight and prevent premature aging.

Servings: 2 Preparation Time: 5 minutes Cooking Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients :

  • Mixed sprouts ( rajma,moong chana, cow peas etc)  – 1/2 cup
  • Rice.      – 1/2 cup, soaked and drained
  • Chopped onion – 1 small
  • Ghee.      – 1/2 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds.-1/2  tsp
  • Salt as required
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • Garlic paste  – 1 tsp

Method :

  1. Heat the pressure pan. Add ghee in it along with cumin seeds.Roast them and add the chopped onions.
  2. Stir them well until they get cooked.
  3. Mix in the rice, sprouts, and salt and stir for a few seconds.
  4. Add 3 cups of water, mix well and pressure cook.
  5. Mash the contents before serving.

11. Channa Sundal

One of the popular recipes for children of the South Indian zone and the easiest one!

The loaded source of protein helps in developing the muscular strength of your children and contains good amount of folate,iron and phosphorus. Fibre aids in good digestion.

Servings: 2 Preparation Time: 6 hours for the chickpeas to soak overnight Cooking Time: 3 minutes

Ingredients :

  • 1 cup dried white chickpeas
  • One tsp of black mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp of urad dal
  • One pinch of asafoetida
  • 2 dry red chillies
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 2-3 tbsp of freshly grated coconut
  • Salt as required

Preparation

  • Rinse the chickpeas and soak them in water overnight.
  • Drain the water and pressure cook the soaked chickpeas with one teaspoon of salt.  Add three to four cups of water till they are cooked till soft.
  • Drain and keep aside.

Method

  1. Heat the oil in pan. Add mustard seeds and urad dal. Let them crackle.
  2. Add the curry leaves, asafoetida,red chillies. Fry for 10-15 seconds.
  3. Now add the cooked chickpeas and salt. Store and saute for 4 to 5 minutes on a low to medium flame.
  4. Switch off the flame and add the coconut.
  5. Stir well.
  6. Serve the protein rich snack to your child.

12. Mini Pea Pancakes

  • 1 cup frozen peas ( cooked as per instructions on pack)
  • 1/2 cup of rolled oats

  • Grind the oats, cooked peas, cheese and eggs in the blender to form a thick paste.
  • Heat the tawa. Take 1 tbsp of each paste and spread in the tawa into firm,round shapes. Let them cook.
  • Flip to the other side.Cook until they get a little golden brown.
  • There you are! The fluffy pancakes are ready!

13. Cauliflower Egg Toast

This snack is one of the most delicious recipes for children I came across. Cheese is a good source of calcium which is key nutrient for health bones,wound healing and blood clotting factors.

Yields: 8 toast Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 5 minutes

Ingredients :

  • 350 grams cauliflower florets
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 cup of grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 tsp of Chat masala

Method:

  1. Chop the cauliflower roughly and grind them.
  2. Whisk eggs. Add cheese and cauliflower.
  3. Add salt to taste. It will form as a thick paste.
  4. Heat the tawa. Grease it with butter or oil. Spread the paste in circular motions to get a round shape.
  5. Let it cook. Flip to the other side.

14. Banana Oat Picklets

No sugar snack recipes for children! Banana is a loaded source of potassium which maintains heart health and sedative effects to maintain a good sleep.

Yield : 12 picklets Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 5 minutes

Ingredients :

  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup of rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup wholemeal flour
  • Milk(1/2 to 1 cup)
  • 1 tsp of baking powder
  • 1 Mashed banana
  • Pinch of cinnamon

Method:

  1. Whisk egg.
  2. Mix all the dry ingredients inside.
  3. Add 1/2 cup of milk along with the mashed banana and cinnamons.
  4. If needed, add more milk if the batter is too dry.
  5. Heat a tawa with small amount of oil.
  6. Drop in spoonfuls of the batter. Cook until small bubbles pop on the surface of picklets.

15. Kidney Bean, Sweet Potato And Carrot Cutlets

Ingredients :

  • Kidney beans -420 grams
  • 1 medium raw sweet potato
  • One cup of whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup of carrots, grated
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil
  • 1 tsp of turmeric
  • 1/4 tsp of chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp of dhaniya powder
  • 1/4 tsp of cumin seeds
  • 1 egg
  • Salt and pepper to taste.

Method :

  1. Soak the kidney beans in hot water for 45 minutes until they get soft.
  2. Pressure cook the chopped pieces of  sweet potato.
  3. Heat a tawa and add some olive oil to it. Add the cumin seeds and carrots. Cook them well.
  4. Next, add the kidney beans, sweet potato and the whisked egg along with the turmeric. Cook them well.
  5. Let them cool down. Blend them in a food processor or mixer to make a thick paste. Add water if you didn’t get the correct consistency.
  6. Form them into small patties. Heat the tawa and add oil to it.
  7. Cook them till they get golden brown.  Flip to the other side.

The kidney beans cutlet is ready!

16. Palak Poori (With Spinach)

Spinach again? Let’s do it with pooris. Your child will ask for more. Add it to the list of recipes for children.

Servings : 4 Preparation Time : 45 minutes Cooking Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients :

  • 100 grams of roughly chopped spinach
  • 3 cups of boiling water
  • I inch ginger chopped
  • I green chilli chopped
  • 2 cups of cold water

Other Ingredients For Palak Poori

  • 2 cups of whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 tsp of carom seeds
  • 1/4 cup of water ( required)
  • 1 pinch asafoetida
  • Oil for deep frying

Method:

  1. Rinse the spinach leaves in running water very well. Pick the spinach leaves from the water.
  2. Boil 3 cups of water in a pan. Keep the pan down. Immerse the leaves in hot water and blanch for one minute.
  3. Then, place the blanched leaves in 2 cups of cold water for a minute.
  4. Add the leaves in the food blender or mixer along with the ginger and chilli peace. Grind them to a smooth puree without adding water.

Making Of Palak Poori Dough

  1. Take 2 cups of whole wheat flour in a pan or mixing flour. Add salt to taste.
  2. Mix the palak puree paste with the wheat flour. Add water a little to get a semi soft dough. ( According to the consistency)
  3. Then divide them into small balls.
  4. Flatten the balls and roll the dough into a circular shape.
  5. Add oil in a kadai. Take one small piece of dough and put it into the oil, if it doesn’t drown and gradually stay on top, the oil is ready and you can fry your patties.
  6. Press them with a spoon so that the palak Poori puffs up while frying.
  7. Then flip it to the other side with a slotted spoon.
  8. Prepare the remaining patties in the same way.

Serve them with potato gravy!

17. Mushroom Egg Omelette

Mushrooms being the only plant source of vitamin D, it is much needed for children! Vitamin D is specifically helpful for bones and prevents disorders like arthritis etc. One of tasty recipes for children done at 10 minutes!

Servings: 2 Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 3 eggs
  • Onion – 2 tbsp
  • 1 cup of slice mushroom
  • Cumin seeds -1/2 tsp
  • Garlic – 2 chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Green chilli -1 (optional)
  • Pepper powder -1/4 tsp
  • Ghee, butter -2 tsp

Method:

  • Slice onions, garlic and green chillies.
  • Wash mushroom thoroughly and cut them into small pieces.
  • Heat a pan, add oil in it. Next, add cumin seeds. Let them crackle. Add the onions, garlic and green chillies.
  • Add the sliced mushrooms along with salt and pepper. Mix them well and cook the mushrooms for 5 mins in low medium flame. Switch off once done.
  • Crack open the eggs. Beat them well. Add required salt and turmeric powder.
  • Heat a tawa and grease them with butter or oil. Pour the beaten eggs into the tawa.
  • Now spread the cooked mushroom mixture over it. Cook it for 3 minutes in low heat.
  • Once cooked at one side, flip to the other side.

Serve your baby!

19. Beetroot Cutlet

The crispiest beetroot cutlet recipes for children is going to increase the level of hemoglobin in your child’s body.


Servings: 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 5 Minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium sized beets
  • 3 medium sized potatoes
  • 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp of red chilli powder
  • 3/4 tsp of fennel powder
  • 1/2 tsp of garam masala powder
  • 3/4 tsp of coriander powder
  • 1 tsp of lemon juice
  • 1-2 green chilli finely chopped
  • 3/4 tsp of ginger paste
  • 1 1/2 tbsp of white rice flour
  • 1/2 cup rava
  • 1 1/2 tbsp of oil for frying
  • 3/4 tsp of chat masala

Method:

  1. Boil the beetroot and potatoes together in a pressure cooker with enough salt and water on medium flame. Wait for 7-8 whistles.
  2. Drain all the water. Peel and grate the beetroot. Grate the potato in the same bowl. Mash them together to get a perfect mix for a cutlet.
  3. Add all the spices powder and green chilli along with the white rice flour.
  4. Mix everything well and shape them into round tikkis. Check the salt. Add more flour if they didn’t get a firm shape.
  5. Make beetroot patties.
  6. Take some roasted semolina ( rava ) in a plate.
  7. Please each cutlet on the rava and coat them on both sides.
  8. Heat the tawa and add some oil. Fry them until they get crisp.
  9. Flip to the other side.
  10. Do the same for the remaining cutlets.
  11. Take them out and remove the excess oil using a tissue paper.
  12. Hot , mouth savory beetroot cutlets are ready!

20. Cinnamon Egg Pudding

One of the easiest protein rich egg recipes for children!

Serving: 2 Preparation time: 2 minute Cooking time: 5 Minutes

Ingredients :

  • Egg -1
  • Milk – 1/2 cup
  • Vanilla essence – few drops
  • A pinch of cinnamon
  • Method:
  • Add milk and eggs in a bowl and whisk thoroughly.

Method:

  • Add cinnamon and vanilla to the bowl and mix it well.
  • Transfer to a heatproof bowl and steam the mix.
  • Put it in a pressure cooker for upto two whistles with enough water.
  • Refrigerate it and serve it cold.
