To Refrigerate! or not. When it comes to household accessories, it doesn’t matter what else we buy, but one will always have a fridge in his house. It has become essential furniture of the house beat rich or poor.

Moreover, in this fast-moving society, it’s hard for one to get time for buying natural foods every day. Hence it’s always easy to store and use them for almost 3 days and at least 10 days of duration. Yeah, I know! We all are that busy, or should I say lazy?

Not only vegetables but also we store the food remains that we made yesterday to use it the next day. Moreover, During this covid19 pandemic, it’s hard to even set our foot outside thereby making us more inactive. Some also buy meat for a week and store it on the freezer to use it later.

As all these habits are not very healthy, medical experts suggest that it can cause serious problems and side effects.

In that way, let’s look into some of the items which are not to be stored in the refrigerator.

1. Potato

Generally, you can keep the potato outside for a week and use them for cooking. They don’t go bad that easy. You don’t have to store them inside the fridge or refrigerate them. When you do refrigerate it, the starch content in them tends to break due to the coldness inside. Thus affecting their nutrition content and taste of the dishes, while cooked using such potatoes.

2. Onion, Is It Safe To Refrigerate?

When you store onion inside the fridge, they rotten soon. It is recommended to be stored in a quiet warm place to last longer. However, be careful not to store them in a place where they are exposed to direct sunlight.

3. Garlic

Keeping garlic in the fridge can their natural taste. So, the most preferred way of storage is outside in room temperature.

Garlic is needed to be well-aerated to stay fresh and more natural. Thus when added in food it tastes better as well you can gain the most of its nutrients.

4. Muskmelon

Water fruits like musk melon and watermelons are best to be stored in warm temperatures. By storing them in the fridge, you may reduce the oxygenated contents by the coldness present inside.

So, it’s best to eat them at normal room temperature instead of having cold watermelons to gain their complete advantages.

At the same time, in the case of muskmelon once cut can store them in the fridge from 3 to 4 days.

5. Do not refrigerate Honey!

When you store honey in the fridge, it can turn from its viscous state and crystalizes.
It’s very good to be stored in normal room temperature for longer usage.

There is no need for storage in the fridge. It can stay fresh if you keep it tightly sealed outside.

In case, if the honey crystallizes, you can retrieve its state by heating the container inside boiling water.

6. Bread

Bread is manufactured as per for short-time. Some may refrigerate them in order to avoid fungal growth.

By doing so you will lose its true taste and flavor which makes them not very pleasant to eat.

7. Nuts

If we bottle the nuts in the fridge, such as cashews, groundnut, and pistachios it will lose its unique flavor.

It is best to store them in an airtight container at room temperature, as they absorb the odors of other foods in the fridge.

8. Coffee Nuts

When refrigerating coffee nuts, you cannot identify the difference between the coffee if it’s good or bad or gone bad. They all will taste the same.

Store the coffee seeds in an airtight container at room temperature. So, you can enjoy the true flavor and mood of coffee.

9. Tomatoes Go Bad If You Refrigerate.

When tomatoes are stored in the fridge, it will take away its flavor and get a very smooth texture. In particular, if the tomatoes are very ripe, the best way is to cook it immediately.

Do not put it in the fridge, thinking that it will stay the same coz it won’t. You can store unripe tomatoes outside at room temperature and use them for 3 to 7 days.

10. Apples

If you want to cool your apples you can freeze, but unnecessarily cooling it will reduce the apple’s natural texture and break the crispness.

The apple can be left for two weeks outside. It is not a fruit that spoils so easily.

11. Berry Fruits

We can’t store these fruits for very long days, so it’s best to buy and eat those fruits when you need them.

If you need to keep eating this, it’s okay to keep it on the fridge. Although they are likely to spoil very quickly because of the cold in the fridge as well.

12. Stone fruits, Do Not Refrigerate It.

Fruits such as plums and peaches can be ripened better by keeping them at room temperature. It is best to store it in a counter or in the house to get the best taste.

13. Hazelnut/ Peanut butter Spread

It is best to store a few more ingredients such as butter and jam for bread at room temperature without storing them in the fridge. Storing them in the fridge can affect their intense flavor and make them thick and hard to spread.

14. Hot Sauce, Is It To Refrigerate?

There is no need to store it in fridge since they have high vinegar content to prevent bacterial growth. Further the spiciness is unaffected when stored outside in room temperature;)

15. Avocados

Unriped avocados are better off when stored outside. They can ripe in 3 – 4 days. However when kept inside the fridge, it can prolong the process and can cause them to go bad sooner.

Although once ripened, they can go inside the fridge and be eaten when you desire to eat.

Like avocados, donot store mangoes inside a refrigerator as well since the cold may affect it’s natural ripening. Also when you refrigerate citrus fruits, it may dry out losing its juicy content.

16. Pastries

Pastries and cake taste better when you store them at room temperature. If you store your pastry treats in the fridge, the inevitable condensation may compromise their texture, leaving them soggy and not very pleasant to eat.

Tea Cakes are fresh when you store them in a air tight container for 3 to 4 days. But, ofcourse the creamed ones are better when refrigerated.

17. Do Not Refrigerate Banana!

Banana ripens under earm temperatures, around 15-20°C (59-68°F). Storing them inside the fridge can damage the cell walls of their skin turning it black.

18. Olive oil

You are not supposed to store any oil in very cold temperature. It can make them cloudy and grainy. However, incase of olive oil do not store them under direct sunlight as well.

It can deteriorate its properties. Hence you may store them in a dark, cool place of your kitchen cupboard.

The High salt and vinegar content make them more suitable to be stored outside in room temperature for upto 6 months. Hence no need for them to occupy any space inside fridge. Plus, their storage inside the fridge can alter their unique taste.

Though refrigerator has its evolution towards this fast moving lifestyles, we must learn to manage our time to eat healthy. So, let’s all travel back a little and find more time to maintain a healthy life Style. This include simple steps like avoiding fast foods and trying to eat freshly cooked foods, to attain its complete benefits.

Also, based on the development of technology and the need of its usage, the Refrigerators now a days are twice their size comparing to its origin. Even with all these development, there seems to be no space left in the fridge to dump our food remains.

Most of us have this problem. It’s because though we cook or eat outside we always tend to store the remains and keep forgetting of it. Later when there is no space we start to dispose the old stuff.

We all need to stop repeating this habit for the betterment of both ourself and others. Since these old foods can spoil the air and freshness inside the fridge thus affecting their better functioning.
