Veiny hands? Something related with me. Yeah, I have veiny hands. There are many people who feel bad about it. But, I don’t cuz my mom have the same veiny hands as me!

I like them and I used to play with them by keep the hands down in a relaxed condition  (allowing blood to rush to my fingers where i could see my veins bulge more) and raise them slowly to see my fat green veins disappear ( where the blood is rushing backwards!).

This was actually thought by my professor during the surgery lecture:) Stop trying it lol!

All humans generally have visible veins which are more prominent in skinny, fair skin complexion type.

But it visibly can be seen bulging out of the skin. There are many causes for it. It is even a serious sign for developing cardiovascular diseases.

Let’s dive straight to see the physiology behind bulging veins and the causes behind it!

….

Physiology Behind Bulging Veins

Veins are responsible for transportation of deoxygenated blood back to the heart and lungs to be oxygenated. Many veins, particularly those in the arms and legs have one way valves.

They are responsible for controlling the flow of blood. When the veins bulge in the hand or any part of the body means the blood is pooling in the vein either due to the problem in vein itself or a underlying cause (IV cannula etc.)

Bulging veins are more common in leg due to prolonged standing and walking upright increases the pressure in your body.

….

Normal Causes Behind Bulging Veins

1. Sports

Are you active in sports? Exercise such as weight lifting etc can cause your veins to bulge temporarily which is usually not a thing to worry.

While an exercise as strenous as weight lifting builds body, it excess pressure on your blood vessels making them rigid and causing them to bulge becoming more visible.

Weight lifting doesn’t directly affects veins, it affect the surrounding muscles, increasing the muscle size and density makes the veins visible even during relaxing.

….

2. Skinny People- Here’s Why?

Thin people have a thin layer of fat under their skin and the fat is not enough to hide their veins. This causes veins to be more visible beneath the surface.

….

3. Fair Complexion

People who are pale and anaemic have veins that are much more apparent than those with darker skin tones.

….

4. Pregnancy

Visible veins are something that meets up with pregnancy! The increase in blood volume to support your growing fetus in the body will result in prominent veins. The network of blood vessels  works overtime to transport the increased blood volume around the body will nourish the fetus.

They will probably disappear after delivery. There is nothing to worry much unless they are painful, swollen, warm and tender. Contact with your doctor immediately when you noticed these signs!

…..

5. Aging

Why aging develops bulging veins? :/

As we get older, those one way valves present in our veins which keeps our blood from moving backward gets weaker which makes your blood moves backwards.

You don’t need to worry unless they are disturbing you. The pressure from the increased amount of blood within the vein buildups can also cause serious condition called varicose veins.

…..

6. Drug Reactions

Skin thinning leading to visible veins can be due to drug reactions as well! Steroids may cause skin thinning which eventually lead to visible bulging veins in which your body may release excessive amounts of steroids in conditions like cushing syndrome etc.

….

7. Genetics

It plays an important role in the appearance of hand veins. People with a immediate family member who has bulging hand veins may develop bulging veins in their hands.

….

8. Warmer temperatures

If you are in a hot temperature, the body sends extra blood to the surface veins to try to cool the body. Conversely, you can even find out that your veins become less visible in cold temperatures.

…..

Abnormal Conditions Behind Bulging Veins

9. Superficial Thrombophlebitis

Have you been ever admitted in bed and administered with a IV cannula(what we say,”the glucose drip set”) and ended up with swelling in your veins? Superficial thrombophlebitis is a swelling of vein which is closer to the surface of skin.

An evil blood clot is the cause behind it which results in pain and discomfort but doesn’t usually harm.

…..

10. Deep Vein Thrombosis

This is a very common condition which occurs in old aged elders but occurs mostly in the deep veins present in the leg due a thrombosis (blood clot).

This is caused mostly due to physical inactivity, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, hyperfibrinogenemia etc.

…..

3. Varicose Veins

It is a condition in which the veins which have become abnormally enlarged. Symptoms include pain in the area and swelling.
There are not specific causes.

Risk factors include obesity, leg trauma, physical inactivity, family history and pregnancy etc.

It must be treated by compression stockings, exercise, elevating the legs and weight loss. Medical procedures include sclerotherapy and vein stripping.

You must always check with your doctor if you develop any disturbance due to the bulging veins.
