This topic of benefits of sesame chikki “Ellu mittai” brings me back to the childhood memories.

Once I and my older brother went to a small stall to buy something to eat when we get bored (yeah,we get hungry when we get bored lol!).

The string of colourful helium filled potato chips packets caught my eyes and I took the West Indies flavour!

While my brother was using his both hands to open a jar which was tightly closed. In that, I saw many black balls which was unattractive.

He said that they were ellumittai. I sulked at him. He remarked that he is a healthy 80’s kid and I am a unhealthy 2k kid.

Maybe, he was right at the time cuz I am here to point out the nutritional boons of the after-school snack of our parents.

Sesame Balls

It is called til in Hindi, Tila and raashi in Oriya, ellu in Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada and Nuvvulu in Telugu! It is one of the traditional sweets in the southern part of India.

Sesame, in India, is been a major cultivar following the Harappa period. Most of the school days on the way back home, Sesame burfi are stored in the glass jars that just drools anybody’s mouth who passes through the shop.

They are so nutritious with the less ingredients of Sesame seeds, jaggery, water and Ghee. This snack stay good for many days if maintained in an air tight container.

Sesame/Ellu mittais are of two types, white and Black.

White ones are good sources of calcium while the Black ones are rich in iron.

Be it for diabetes, blood pressure or delayed menstrual cycle, these seeds just make so much advantageous when consumed well. These energy bars is a crunchy healthy snack and you are sure to love it.
